Fred Beal is a Yankee who turned radical during his boyhood in the mill-town of Lawrence, Mass. His journey down the Marxist road, took him to Gastonia, N. C., where in 1929, along with other northern Communists, he organized and led a bloody textile strike. In a raid on union headquarters, Police Chief O. F. Aderholt of Gastonia was shot dead-whether by strikers or by drunken officers has never been conclusively proved. Convicted of conspiracy to murder, Fred Beal and six others jumped their $5,000 appeal bonds and fled to Soviet Russia. There one blossomed...
Prien's story was that he had "wormed and twisted" his way into Scapa Flow on the surface (mines and nets are 30 ft. down) on a night when there was "the most extraordinary display of Northern Lights I have seen in 15 years at sea." He said: "I was lying in very close to shore and several cars passed. One stopped for a moment, then turned about and rushed back at full speed. . . . This week it came-a small push along a four-mile front, but the first attack in force the Germans have made. It came along the northern flank through the Moselle Valley-an offensive that an official French communique described as "an attack supported by artillery fire." But they had pushed back about a mile and a quarter into...

During the last year he has worked hard, appearing at Army reviews in Libya only a few days after he had attended maneuvers in Northern Italy. He has found little time to spend in his big palace in the heart of Naples. The applause he receives at public gatherings is even more vociferous than that accorded Il Duce. Because of the Prince of Piedmont's growing popularity, the old familiar Italian cry of Avanti...
...from India, Indians will probably show no haste in deciding to help the British Lion. Last week, however, the old bugbear of Russian expansion was looming in the North. There were reports of mobilization in mountainous, wild Afghanistan caused by the proximity of reinforced Soviet garrisons. Afghanistan is the northern gateway to India. From Shanghai came a story of Russian troops in China's Sinkiang Province and a fantastic suggestion that they might threaten India via the trackless 16,000-ft. high plateau of Tibet. Few Indian leaders, and certainly not M. K. Gandhi, would care to exchange their...
