...score was soon settled, however. Last Monday morning a packed bus carrying students and police officers was plodding through northern Jerusalem. At 7:55 an Arab passenger sitting in the back detonated a bomb containing about 10 lbs. of the chemical explosive 3-acetone. The blast was so powerful that it destroyed not only the bus in which the bomber was riding but another traveling alongside it as well. In addition to himself, the terrorist succeeded in killing four passengers, including a visiting American; 107 others were wounded. Israeli security experts were shocked. One high-ranking intelligence official lamented...

...much more, however, than the locus of past political evil. For every person sent unwillingly to exile in its arctic wastelands, many others came to hunt, trap, fish, log or mine. The harsh life drove many back, but others stayed, captivated by the sublime beauty of earth's greatest northern landscape. Vitali Menshikov, an oceanographer by training, came to the Kamchatka peninsula in the Far East 27 years ago. ...would disagree, but, as Schaller knows, the comforting image of Siberia as the world's last pristine northern frontier also misses the mark. Kamchatka is but a tiny piece of Siberia, and elsewhere this continent-size region has been grievously wounded, and continues to be wounded today. "Let's say you decide to get away from it all in Siberia," says Alexei Yablokov, Russia's leading environmentalist and once President Boris Yeltsin's top adviser on ecology. "You travel up the Yenisey River toward the Arctic. You look across the empty tundra and think you are alone in nature, miles...

Sikh separatists claimed responsibility today for a car bomb that killed 16 people in northern India, including Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, outside government headquarters. But New Delhi bureau chief Dick Thompson reports that that Punjabi Sikhs are so disgusted by the violence that the incident promises to splinter the minority drive for independence. "The last few years have witnessed a relative peace here and some remarkable agricultural prosperity, and already there's a palpable resentment that the violence could come back as a result of this." Before Singh, Thompson says, Hindus were commonly hauled out of public buses...

...powerful car bomb killed 11 people in northern India, including Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, outside government headquarters. New Delhi bureau chief Dick Thompson reports that the blast destroyed three vehicles, broke windows in nearby buildings, and ripped Singh and his guards' bodies. The murders are ironic: "Singh and his police chief were widely credited with ending years of violence in Punjab. That success was shared by the man who engineered Singh's election, India's Prime Minister Rao. Now, Rao's anti-terrorism accomplishment seems to have been blown apart also." Though no group has claimed responsibility...
