...early pioneers lives on. From tiny Azorean settlements like the village at Armação with its colonial-style chapel, to the grand timber-framed Germanic architecture of Blumenau (home to one of the world's biggest Oktoberfests outside Munich), the atmosphere here couldn't differ more from northern Brazil, which is influenced by the black population and elements of African culture held over from the slave trade. There's even a "Brazilian Tyrol" in the alpine chalets of Treze Tílias, and in the smallest rural villages, German and Italian are still spoken today...

Last week’s killing spree at Northern Illinois University (NIU) that left five students dead and 16 wounded is shocking in its apparent randomness and bewildering in the myriad questions it leaves unanswered. Why did Steven Kazmierczak—a kind and intelligent former graduate student at NIU—open fire on a lecture hall full of undergraduate students? What could spur anyone to senseless killing? And perhaps most importantly, what could NIU have done—and what can any other university do—to prevent future tragedies like this one? In NIU?...

When India and China went to war in 1962, the Indian Army's supply routes in its remote northern valleys quickly became overstretched. Keen for closer ties with New Delhi, U.S. President John F. Kennedy loaned India a squadron of C-130 transport aircraft, which flew regular sorties to resupply Indian troops. ...There's no question, of course, that President Bush is accentuating the positive. In Tanzania's northern neighbor, Kenya, corruption and vote-rigging is at the center of a bloody stand-off between the government and the opposition in which 1,000 have died since a disputed general election in December. Notwithstanding the President's comments in Tanzania, the U.S. gives $1 billion a year in aid to a Kenyan government that ranks eighth from the bottom in Transparency International's world corruption tables. Bush has declined to visit Kenya, a key ally in Africa, sending Secretary of State Condoleezza...

...Northern Ireland, which sends 17 representatives to Parliament, the election made history. After years of boycotting British ballots, Sinn Fein (Ourselves Alone), the political arm of the Irish Republican Army, picked up a seat. The winner, Gerry Adams, campaigned unashamedly in support of the "armed struggle" against British rule. He ended up polling 16,000 votes in his west Belfast district, 6,000 more than the constituency's highly esteemed Member of Parliament, Gerard Fitt, a Catholic. Adams has no intention of taking his newly won seat at Westminster: his party does not recognize Parliament...
