Lieutenant Peary began his lecture by describing the position of Greenland, the earliest known Arctic land, which was first supposed to from a great Arctic continent, but is now known to be an island. It is by passing from the northernmost point of this island through the open sea that Lieutenant Peary thinks the North Pole will be reached.
