High Foreheads. Most startling is the dramatically lighted collection of Northwest Indian masks. With their thrusting chins, hooked noses, popping eyes and arrogant high foreheads, the masks could be expressionist versions of the grandees of the Italian Renaissance. "Tell me what difference in standard there should be between these and the dukes of Ferrara," says Coe challengingly...

Belenko's trip to the U.S. was less dramatic than his dash to Hakodate. The Japanese government, not wanting to give the appearance of total collusion with Washington by allowing Belenko to depart on a U.S. Air Force plane, simply put him on Northwest Orient's Flight 22, which flies regularly from Tokyo to Los Angeles with a stopover in Honolulu. Startled by heavy security precautions at the Tokyo airport, the other 300 passengers soon guessed that Belenko was on board the 747 jet. "I hope we're not hijacked!" exclaimed one nervous passenger. Actually the flight...

Around 7:30 the following evening, 24 hours after the empty bus had been found, a startled watchman at a gravel quarry near Livermore, 100 miles northwest of Chowchilla, saw a bedraggled group-all in their underwear-approaching him. The kidnaping victims had been found, and all were well...

Close Look. Earlier in the week scientists had been reasonably confident that the first alternative site, about 500 miles northwest of the original touchdown area, would prove safe for landing. Pictures from Viking's camera -which can "see" details down to the size of a football field each time the orbiter swoops to within 1,000 miles of Chryse-showed what seemed to be a relatively smooth area between two heavily cratered strips. It appeared to be less hazardous than the original site, which is crisscrossed by crevasses and steep escarpments that could swallow the lander or cause...

After ruling this site out, the scientists turned to a third site some 900 miles west-northwest of the original target area. Preliminary radar data suggested that the new landing zone is smoother than the other two, but Viking scientists wanted detailed photographs of the area before making a final decision. To get them, controllers at J.P.L. last week "tweaked" Viking's thrusters to bring the periapsis (low point) of its orbit directly over the new landing site. If the photographs confirm that Chryse Planitia is relatively smooth, Viking will land on July...
