Most everyone can agree that one of the first bands from the Pacific Northwest which made the kinds of songs associated with grunge--slow churning, soiled with feedback and riff-laden--was Melvins (not "The Melvins," but simply "Melvins"). Melvins have been around since 1984. Along the way, the band has gone through many line-up changes and has released albums as mediocore as Ozma and as flat-out irritating as Bullhead. Obviously I'm not a fan. But in fairness to Melvins followers (who call themselves not "Melvins Army," but "The Melvins Army"), I don't really like Black...
Farmington is the only major town in northwest New Mexico. Things seemed strangely quiet, especially since there were beautiful Indian ruins nearby. The day after I left I was reading a local newspaper and was suddenly reminded that we had just spent two days in the very town where more than a dozen people had been killed by a mysterious virus. We decided not to mention this incident...
...name "Alice Metzinger" had been lifted from the birth certificate of an infant who died the year the gourmet chef was born. Metzinger was really Katherine Ann Power. Before coming to the Northwest, she had lived underground for nine years in women's communes. Before that, she was a straight-A sociology major, who had become a central figure of the Brandeis Strike Information Center, a clearinghouse for information about student strikes all over the country. Professor Richard Onorato, then dean of students, recalls that she had broken into the student-council office to steal stationery to print a political...

A licensed pilot, he relaxes by flying his De Havilland-Beaver seaplane to remote lakes in the Pacific Northwest. The McCaw family, including Craig and his brothers, owned 20% of their company's stock. When the AT&T purchase is completed, their holdings will be worth a combined $2.8 billion, making the McCaws AT&T's largest independent shareholders. Craig, who will become an AT&T board member, will...
...forests are not just tree stands. They are vast, intricate superorganisms; interdependent populations of wildlife; huge, filtering sponges for clear water; great, green lungs breathing out oxygen. Less than ! 10% of the Northwest's old growth is still uncut, and much of this is in patches too small to be ecologically self-sustaining. In 15 years or so, enough second-growth timber will have reached marketable size to allow some logging towns to limp along. But to bridge the years till then, virtually all the old growth not in national parks would have...
