Even U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan can't resist the lure of a certain statuesque Oscar winner. For years the U.N. has denied filmmakers access to the inside of its New York City headquarters--Alfred Hitchcock couldn't get in to shoot his 1959 thriller North by Northwest. But director Sydney Pollack won approval last week to film The Interpreter, in which NICOLE KIDMAN plays a translator who overhears an assassination plot. Diplomats are now inquiring whether they'll get to meet Kidman and how they can become extras. Perhaps peace in the Middle East can be brokered...

Clean and dry is not an interesting environment for Derek Lovley. As a boy, he always wanted to go where he might get wet. Growing up in northwest Connecticut, he worked summers as a lifeguard and briefly considered a career monitoring streams. So even though his work in environmental microbiology kept him indoors, when it was time to open his own lab in 1995, he chose to do so at the University of Massachusetts in pastoral Amherst, turning down more prestigious Ivy League suitors so that he could have a better prospect of getting his boots muddy...

There are upsides to having protectors in your midst, as passengers on a Northwest Airlines flight from Honolulu to Seattle discovered last month. A man, 29, with a history of assault convictions charged toward the cockpit, shouting that he wanted to see the pilot. He was quickly subdued by undercover marshals. They did not need to use guns. But because weapons can still make it past airport screeners, as test runs have shown, some security experts say marshals must be given deadly tools. "A gun on board is a piece of emergency equipment," says Steve Luckey, head of the security...

...best-kept secret of Pulau Langkawi, an island off the northwest coast of Malaysia, isn't its stunning sunsets. It's the four kampong (village) houses on the western edge of the island, perched next to a field of reeds, and known collectively as the Bon Ton Resort, tel: (60-4) 955 6787. Australian owner Narelle McMurtrie purchased the antique Malay villas from islanders, dismantled them, then reassembled them on her 1.5-hectare compound. You can choose to stay in the century-old Black Coral, 60-year-old Yellow Orchid (formerly the home of a fisherman), the painstakingly restored...
