...rejoices at escaping the jaws of a crocodile only to be crushed by its flailing tail, Filipinos began to think differently when the backlash of the typhoon curled back and caught northern Luzon. The fury of the storm had abated but the heavens over the three northwestern provinces of the island suddenly liquefied. Through those provinces-Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela, Cagayan-flows the Rio Grande de Cagayan, biggest river of the Philippines, due north through 200 miles of rich farming country. The typhoon passed, the rain stopped and then came calamity. The Cagayan began to rise...
Chicago's Northwestern University last week announced successful tests of a "sunburnometer," a recording device to measure the intensity of the ultraviolet component of the sun's light which causes sunburn. The sunburn-causing wave lengths can be considered as the "health band" in the solar spectrum, mainly because it contains the still narrower band which produces vitamin D in the skin. Developed by Professors Walter S. Huxford and Robert Cashman, the "sunburnometer" is noi sensitive to visible light or to the short radiation on the other side of the sunburn band. It may also be used...
...Publicity is the cheapest thing a doctor can pursue. But when it serves a purpose, you've got to do it. Make any vice look ridiculous, and it won't flourish much longer.'' ...clerk what he had for arthritis," said Professor Mayers, "the clerk could keep him standing there talking continuously for three days, two nights, seven hours and twenty minutes, and he could devote only one minute to each drug, telling the arthritic how and when to use it." According to Northwestern's Mayers, the ludicrous abundance of ethical, proprietary or quack liniments also sold in drugstores to arthritics "is of no greater therapeutic value than would be a hot, wet towel to the afflicted joint." In contrast, conscientious doctors have some three dozen different drugs, four liniments to treat...
...each other fall, have one thing in common. Both are seasoned joiners and good Elks, since both have been in politics for a long time. Jim didn't go to college, so he missed joining a Greek Fraternity. John D. M. didn't became a Phi Alpha Delta at Northwestern University in 1916. Curly-haired, youthful, with a smile and a direct manner of speaking as valuable as Jim Farley's handshake, John D. M. Hamilton is better looking than his brother Hale, who appears in small movie parts, usually as the smugly successful business executive not adverse...
