Joshua Abraham Norton, an English Jew, came to San Francisco from South Africa during the '49 gold rush. In 1853 he and a partner tried to corner all the rice in the city, would have done so had not two rice ships arrived unexpectedly in the harbor. Ruin unseated Joshua Norton's reason.
