Miss Garrity's objective in writing the book, beyond the money in it (85,000 copies sold), was to persuade women no prettier than herself ("I have heavy thighs, lumpy hips, protruding teeth, a ski-jump nose, poor posture, flat feet, and uneven ears") that being unattractive is no obstacle in the sex game. Her rules for playing it are inventive, to say the least. Among other things, she invites her readers to fantasize "being ravished by a tiger," to keep a sex diary ("briefly rate your sexual response as superb, good, indifferent or lousy"), and to "train like...

...still impressive-at least to Hancock, who is his own best publicist. "There really is no valid comparison to this work. The Stone Mountain carving is bigger than any other in the world," he says. Lee's horse, Traveller, is 147 ft. from nose to tail; those so inclined, says Hancock, "could ride a horse along Traveller's back." ...confronting this street corner press, so much of it thumbing its nose at me, I had to remind myself again and again of the distinction between expression and action. I don't imagine it will be much easier for others. Bearing in mind that it is no test of citizenship to abide only the man who agrees with us, the reader can test his own allegiance to the First Amendment by computing how much of the anthologized material to follow he is willing to defend. He will, as well, learn which disturbs him the least- the obscenity, the pornography...
