...probably know that Internet mailing lists tend to be free discussion groups, focused on particular issues. There are more than 200,000 of them on the Net with some 15 million subscribers discussing everything from global warming to nose hair. Setting up a public mailing list used to be a hassle unless you had access to industrial-strength mailing programs used at universities that allow folks to do things such as automatically subscribe to and unsubscribe from lists. ...black slang, being "bougie," derived from bourgeois, means being socially pretentious. It fits Lawrence Otis Graham to a tee. His book, Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class (HarperCollins; 418 pages; $25), is the literary equivalent of the nose job Graham obtained so that he could "further buy into the aesthetic biases [toward light complexions, straight hair and sharp features] that many among the black elite hold so dear." This sounds less and less like a woman victimized by the president and more and more a pawn in a political game. Given this, NOW would have no reason to get involved. To do so would do nothing for women's rights and would, instead, be playing directly into conservative...
