...simple genius of Be Kind Rewind is that it is as scruffy and slapdash as the movies made by these Passaic Pasolinis. Inhabiting some border landscape between fantasy and nostalgia, it honors both the let's-try-anything impulse of the first filmmakers a century ago and the highly perishable look and feel of old videotapes, which most of you have consigned to the garage or the garbage. Even as the Times demeans itself to entertain the blogosphere for a moment, it also apparently yearns for its glory days. Its eccentric brand of nostalgia is manifest: until the McCain story hit the Web, sitting atop the website’s “Most Emailed” list was a story about “celebrating the semicolon” on a subway poster. ...Going NoKo Having myself tried to channel James Bond by crossing the DMZ into North Korea with a busload of South Korean tourists, I read Jenn Gearey's report with pleasure and a touch of nostalgia for the government minders, bugged hotel rooms, and forced deleting of photographs that made for a travel experience like no other [Jan. 14]. Hope seemed present: a "unification flag" flew outside our hotel and a KOREA AS ONE banner unfurled during an evening circus show drew the loudest applause of the night. As for generations past who cycled through Hitler's Germany or crossed...

...candidacy. Women form the majority of voters in the primary and general elections. Women are seen as more able to deal with problems of health care and education. Perhaps it is simply her connection to her husband, widely seen as a better president than Bush, and the nostalgia associated with those years that has propelled her candidacy, but if she were a man, I just don’t think she would be a contender...
