...study reconfirms the notion that imitation is not uniquely human (past research has also shown that apes and monkeys easily recognize when they are being copied), and that our affinity for it may have roots in our evolution. What has never been precisely understood, though, is why we like to be parroted so much. One theory is that mimicry somehow promotes safety in groups of animals by binding them together - that mimicry is a kind of social glue. (Read what fat-bellied monkeys tell us about our own social stress...

...Everyone I spoke to—left-leaning, flexibly minded, young and middle-aged people—was, at least on the gut level, sympathetic to the ban. Yet, as abhorrent as the burqa is to me, the notion of legislating an outright ban was something that, with my American gut, I could not swallow...

...Trading Places A few years ago, that question - and the notion that China could drive global growth - would have seemed absurd. After all, China's economy was dependent on manufacturing, which was in turn dependent on demand from the U.S., the world's undisputed economic locomotive. But that engine remains sidetracked. The IMF predicts the U.S. economy will contract 2.6% this year. American home prices continue to fall in some cities, while the unemployment rate has soared to 9.5%, the highest since 1983. That's a big load to take on - which then gives traction to this notion that we are interested in expanding government, which then feeds into suspicions that somehow health care is another big government project that we can't afford ... Had we not been in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, I would have led with health-care reform, made the case, and potentially we might have had it done by now. ...Preston Hollow—the former president’s new haunt, and the neighborhood I grew up in—is the sort of Norman Rockwell-ish enclave that tries to embody the most idealized notion of American family values: The houses are large and traditional, the lawns green and resplendent, and the children blonde and bike-prone. It likes to propagate its image as the most down-to-earth of Dallas’s affluent neighborhoods (especially in comparison to the adjacent “Park Cities,” where social intrigue is king). But don?...
