...abandon his academic career and paint, Kandinsky moved to Munich and studied there. After the provincialism of Russia, the artists' colony of Schwabing absorbed him. He called it "a spiritual island in the great world." This was in 1897, at the height of the Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau, movement. What Kandinsky go from Art Nouveau was not so much its airy, sinuous quality as its decorative way of filling space: a painting like Landscape near Murnau, as late a; 1909, is full of references to the style with its slow, thick contour of white cloud, its carefully silhouetted forms...

Between shows there will be music and, if a way is found to transcend Currier House's nouveau-brick decor, atmosphere. The Cabaret hopes to support itself by its cooking--the preliminary menu includes hot and cold drinks, chocolate mousse, baklava, eclairs and pastries. With no admission charge, only the most miserly socialite could begrudge the measly fifty-cent food minimum...
Such a vision--whose form follows in the tradition of the nouveau roman--presents some challenging difficulties. But not without rewards: as sonorous and mysteriously evocative as Faulkner's, more poetically intense than Lawrence Durrell's, Hawkes's lyrical energy in The Blood Oranges conveys in prose more than the feeling of poetry--in fact, there are whole passages rendered metrically. One or two even contain rhymes...
