In this caustic, chilly fantasy of a world-to-come (A.D. 2,500), babies were born in class-distinctive bottles, travel was in state-controlled helicopters, scientific absolutism was the universal rule. People swallowed a tabloid of happiness when they felt blue, worshiped a mechanistic god named "Our Ford," and believed that sexual fidelity was obscene. This week, in an introduction to a new edition of Brave New World (Harper, $2.50; 311 pp.), Novelist Huxley casts a cold eye over his fantasy, firmly classes it among "the artistic sins committed and bequeathed by that different person who was oneself in youth."
