...Nostrand, 54, is a graying, bespectacled and energetic Harvard Ph.D. (American literature). He had been lecturing on the American novel for 13 years at Brown when, in 1964, he volunteered for a job that his colleagues regarded with horror-teaching the required freshman writing course. His students, he soon found, often had grammar down cold but were shaky about organizing their ideas. Later, as a communications consultant to various business firms, he noticed that many executives labored over letters and short messages that turned out to be nearly incomprehensible anyway. The professor's prescription was to isolate the steps...
...Carl-Gustaf Lindstedt) in linking the final mass violence to the brutal, suspensefully executed murder with which the film begins. It is full of lightly sketched details that give Beck, his team of detectives, the whole cop milieu weight and depth almost subliminally, in the manner of a good novel. More than that the picture is familiar and knowing about its setting, Stockholm. The play is derived from a novel, but the tale is not unravelled through dialogue and conventional blocking. Rather, Hali tells his story to the audience with the help of a narrator, and as he talks dancers and players sweep onto the stage and act out many of the adventures around him and with him. The music consists of nothing but a very primitive recorder and a drum, but along with...
...intensified by a Southern upbringing and a Christian conversion. And next to The Moviegoer, whose main Southern Catholic character claims to feel "more Jewish than the Jews I know," and which won the 1962 National Book Award, Percy's declarative style has become self-conscious and strained. His first novel, The Last Gentleman, is his most exploratory, and a personal favorite. But after that, there is the newest song from Mr. Percy's canary...
