...Moderate Republican Charles Percy had to use some $450,000 of his own money to fend off the challenge of Democrat Alex Seith, a lawyer who spent $750,000 of his and his wife's funds on his campaign. Running behind in the polls, the frightened Percy made a novel last-minute plea with TV ads saying that he had gotten the message all right. But he added: "If you don't vote for me, I won't be around to act on it." Enough voters rallied behind Percy to give him a 245,000-vote edge, but the margin...

...afternoon, Swiss time. Conservative Columnist William Buckley knows just what he will be doing: starting his third novel. The author of Saving the Queen and Stained Glass is going to Rougemont, Switzerland, and has set aside five weeks to churn out another thriller. Après-ski and pre-harpsichord practice, Buckley, 52, plans to produce 1,500 words a day. Why the regimen? Often the censors are fairly arbitrary, as in one famous case, when they banned Black Beauty (because of its title). While in Pretoria, I realize I have a banned novel in my suitcase, Alex LaGuma's Fog at the Season's End. For a moment, I feel as if the whole South African security force is about to knock on the door; reassured, I realize I am only liable to a $650 fine, just for reading a novel. It rather makes...

...exercise in egomania, Paradise Alley almost puts Barbra Streisand's A Star Is Born to shame. Besides starring in the film, Stallone wrote the script (from his own novel, no less), directed it and sings the theme song. The plot, far too structurally ambitious for a novice director, is a cynical attempt to cash in on every '40s movie cliche not used in Rocky and most of those that were. Set in 1946, the story tells of three downtrodden brothers who dream of breaking out of Manhattan's impoverished Hell's Kitchen: a lame World...
