Unfortunately, the slower songs are as faceless and schmaltzy as any of Whalum's previous work. It is performances like Whalum's cover of 'NSync's "God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You" that frustrate jazz fans; all the evidence points toward a talented musician afraid to display any individuality. And, ultimately, it is this lack of individuality which mars Unconditional. Whalum wears each smooth-jazz hat-Grover Washington, Kenny G, David Sanborn-well in their respective turn. However, you can't help but feel that the real Kirk Whalum has yet to be heard. B- -Malik...
Which is the funnier piece of music news this week: that the Walrus of Love Barry White (right) spoke (to a rapturous response) at Oxford on Monday or that 'NSync are going to star in Grease 3? Now why in the world, if you're a multiplatinum-selling group, do you choose to star in the sequel to a terrible sequel? I hope this isn't them trying to "do a Bjork" and win prizes at Cannes. Tears were pouring and screams were heard, but I kept reminding myself to stay strong. I vowed at that instant that...
...restrict Jennifer Lopez's butt into size five jeans. As a moving stage carried the group, singing "This I Promise You," into the masses of frantic females, tears of happiness cascaded down my cheeks. I knew that there would be no teddy bear for me tonight, but having 'NSync close to me was enough...
...romantic set was followed with songs from 'NSync's recent album, a compilation of new and edgy tunes. "Space Cowboy" seemed to be the audience favorite, as judged by the manner in which the crowd exploded every time the boys "rode" their imaginary horses. I overheard a mom comment to another fellow mom, "Those boys can sure ride me anytime." I almost doubled over with laughter, but hey, I had to agree...
