...completely biased against boy bands, I should mention that I don't have anything against purely manufactured groups. I really did like Take That before they broke up, for instance. I just don't think the Backstreet Boys are any good. And don't even get me started on 'NSync...
...ugly hairdo. Jennifer Lopez is rapidly wearing out her welcome. Madonna suddenly becomes an Anglophile. Is it any wonder that we have a new crop of teen divas? All the old dames are lame... And while we're in the land of teen pop, I'm quite embarrassed by 'NSync's shattering of the one-day sales records with 2.4 million sold for No Strings Attached. Even more frightening was the Backstreet Boys' implicit challenge to that record when asked by a reporter for their comment, "We'll see you in October when our new album comes out"... And while...
...2Gether," which airs repeatedly on MTV all this week, is supposed to be an inspired spoof of bubblegum boy band pop--a rags to riches tale of five boys picked from the cowfields to become bonafide pop superstars. Whether the show itself portends the end of the Backstreet Boys, 'NSync, Boyzone etc. remains to be seen, but the soundtrack certainly lives up to all the hype. "2Gether," the opening track, sounds just like every opening track on a boy band album--the whole "We've Got it Going On" thing. Another day, another boy band, you might think--until...
...serviceable--but uselessly nominating Meryl Streep for Music of the Heart instead of Reese Witherspoon for Election is a cop-out. If Tom Cruise wins Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia, I'll turn to religion. And I pray that I'll be able to contain my temper when 'NSync takes the stage to perform their Best Original Song nominee, "Music of My Heart"--they'll perform instead of Madonna, whose "Beautiful Stranger" managed to miss the final cut. The good news? We'll also see "Blame Canada," performed on stage since the South Park tune somehow made...
...show up on the Billboard Hot 100 the next Thursday. Want proof? Remember, TRL was the show that first flaunted Britney Spears' assets (all two of them) with the schoolgirl-themed Baby One More Time last December. But TRL once known for having Backstreet Boys at #1, 'NSync at #2, 98 Degrees at #3 every single day isn't just bubblegum pop anymore. On Friday's show, Backstreet held #1, but Korn was close behind at #2, and several R&B groups including Destiny's Child were close on their heels. The young girls who dominate TRL's audience might...
