...spite of some minor technical difficulties (the stage broke), the Dunster House Opera (DHO) gave a sell-out performance of Leonard Bernstein's opera/musical version of Voltaire's Candide last weekend. The cast, particularly Joseph Nuccio'00 had a great deal of fun with an already witty, sarcastic and sexually infused libretto. Audience laughter often echoed the mirth of the lighthearted and light-footed cast...
...went. Nuccio's performance as Voltaire himself, Dr. Pangloss, Cacambo and Martin wowed the audience. One of Nuccio's most memorable numbers is in the angrily energetic "Auto Da Fe" (riot), when he, playing Dr. Pangloss, sings about how he contracted a virus most resembling syphilis in an attempt to save himself from execution for heresy. At several points he breaks into a curious Russian dance, the ensemble matching his energy and spirit as they kick and push him towards one of the black poles, set up as a gallows. Not only is the song about his contraction...
...more clever (and thus more rewarding) than those of the average thriller. The suspense begins when Sam Hendrix (Mike Yank '02) is asked to hold a doll for a woman as they get off an airplane. The woman promptly disappears--until small-time hoods Mike Talman (Joseph Nuccio '00) and Carlino (Jerry Ruiz '00) find her body in Suzy Hendrix' apartment, placed there by their new employer, Harry Rote (Paul Monteleoni '01). Suzy's blindness allows them to search the apartment for the doll, which contains smuggled heroin. Mike manages to gain Suzy's confidence by pretending...
...step ahead of her stalkers (and Rattey's pensive pauses and subtle gesturing give us the sense that her character is always thinking, always plotting). As Gloria, Suzy's teenage helper, Kate Johnsen '01 is appropriately petulant (though she is unfortunately saddled with a number of hackneyed, static lines). Nuccio captures the "teddy-bear" duplicity of Mike Talman while Ruiz, hair slicked back and comb in tow, hams it up for laughs as the incompetent yet menacing Carlino...
...Korn; Michael P. Davidson '00 as the stereotypical Italian brother; Mattias Frey '01 as the timid Major Major Matthew E. Johnson '99 as the boomin Col. Cathcart; Ollie M. Lewis '00 as the dying Clevinger; Andrew K. Mandel '00 as the expressive Chaplain; and Joe A Nuccio '00 as the mercurial Milo. Nearly all of the characters these seven actors play, however, are entertaining and endearing in their dementia--there is simply not room to mention them all here. At moments, their performances are so colorful that mere descriptions are unable to do them justice...
