...West German subsidiary of Japanese Fuji Film wanted a naked woman to adorn one of their five ads in Stern, West Germany's second largest illustrated weekly (circ. 1,600,000). Admen Günther-Jürgen Bahr and Claus Harden of Düsseldorf winced. Nudes are so common in German magazines that Fuji's ad would look like any other page in Stern. How to get the reader to look twice? Bahr and Harden's answer: a nude with a difference-"fat but nice." They assigned the job of finding a model to Hamburg...

Lehmbruck was a finely responsive modeler, but he rarely contrived to give his nudes the unabashed, vigorous monumentality of Maillol's. Qualified by unease, bowed down by shame, indecision or guilt, they avert their gaze and seem on the point of flight or evaporation. The result was a fervently decorative and mannered style of representing the nude, which owed a great deal to Modigliani. ...Marquand, who fathered her two-month-old boy-Sanda was in constant rebellion against a stringent French Catholic upbringing. When her parents refused to let her attend an art school in Paris, she left home at 16 and became a model. Success, travel and money came almost instantaneously. Some nude pictures taken at that time found their way into Playboy only this year, much to her disgust. "The nudity was an act of personal vengeance against my very strict upbringing," she explains. "Today it seems stupid." And her other rumored acts of personal vengeance involving sex and drugs? "Past history...

...Nude Look. "Bareness is the expression of our times," declares Monika Tilley, Austrian-born sportswear designer. Her effort to give "the wearer maximum exposure" is clearly successful in the bathing suit at the right. As with some bikinis, the top and bottom are sold separately. This enables women of unorthodox proportions to jigger the sizes as they must, but might in time encourage the economical shopper to go topless to the beach-or bottomless...
