Dark-haired, pretty Maude Phelps Hutchins, a professional artist and wife of University of Chicago's President Robert Maynard Hutchins, likes to draw psychological studies of nude female figures, which she calls "dialectic" drawings. Last fall, she made a drawing of her eleven-year-old daughter, Frances ("Franja"), a lively little girl who wears her black hair in bangs and braids. To 1,000 fellow faculty members, students and friends last December went a card inscribed on the back: "Merry Christmas from the Hutchinses." On the front was the drawing of the Hutchinses' young daughter holding two candles...
...Glasgow local option "dry" area, it took a special act of Parliament to insure thirsty Scots of a "wee deoch an' doris" on the grounds. Strait-laced Scots, who are now righteously demanding that the grounds be closed on Sundays, last week objected to three classic statues of nude women. The canny Scottish exhibitors, not wishing to spoil the commercial attraction of the statues, temporarily solved the problem- they "clothed" the nudes by pasting pieces of paper on the glass screens in front of the statues...
...first time in the history of the exhibition, the Watson F. Blair Prize of $600 was awarded to a nude, Nude, by Grigory Gluckmann, a Russian artist now living in Paris. Covered with a rosy brown wash modeled into a seated nude figure, the paper was scratched with a razor to bring out highlights and sheen of flesh. The second Blair award of $400 went to Millard Sheets, a handsome, 30-year-old Californian, for Mystic Night (see cut), which seemed "modernist" to Miss Jewett but just kind of nice to other critics...
Artist Evergood's sensations are never any prettier than what he observes, and what he observes in Manhattan is apparently seldom pretty. When he draws a nude model he shows that her feet are dirty and her face is a lamentable part of her body. When he paints down-&-outers in a hobo "jungle" he distorts them to get an effect equivalent to the ugliness he feels. In last week's show of 22 paintings were several in Evergood's vein of wild, clownish humor. Sunday in Astoria and Recreation, big canvasses composed in bright, crude colors...
