Even when he reached his 80s, and his failing strength kept him from large canvases, he continued his search for linear grace in watercolor. For one of his last works, Ingres returned to a favorite subject, a harem nude. His earlier versions had shown her against a background of bathing slave girls; his final version simplified the scene to what it had actually been, a studio pose. And though rendered in watercolor-a lesser medium than oil-The Bather is, if anything, finer than his youthful version of some 60 years before. It was the final proof of his lifetime...
...abruptly assemble themselves into a bust of Dante. An egg cracks and marbles tumble out. A python oozes lazily around a large transparent bowl in which a child is huddled. Beside a giant telescope stands an old man, his ears blazing like light bulbs. On a narrow cot, a nude woman sits giggling and jiggling while an enormous, sinister horseshoe crab...
...among fellow faculty members. Faculty travel funds have been recently interfered with, if not frozen, keeping representatives of the University of California from attending the recent national College Art Association meetings, unless they paid their own way. A segment of one campus newspaper has been suspended for publishing a nude by the early twentieth century German artist George Grosez, a drawing which has been previously published in books about the artist...

The artists arrogated to themselves (as did the poets at the same time) the right to say what art was, with the added inference that if the viewer (or reader) did not understand it, that was his fault...
...Determined Hanging. Much of Pascin's life was a Sisyphean search for satiation. He decorated his endless parties with nude girls, recalls one writer, "as one might place flowers in a vase." Under his perennial black derby, he was sensuously ugly, with heavy features that had the thick texture of Dromedary dates. As he began to age, his art more and more portrayed the image of an old man teased by willing sprites. Only fetishes could further inflame his nudes; lesbian poses and green stockings added a salacious veneer to his final fleshy visions...
