...April 18, 1945, with the Third Reich on the verge of collapse, Army Lieutenant Michael Daly was leading his company through Nuremberg, Germany, when it encountered machine-gun fire. Shielding his men, Daly crept forward alone and single-handedly vanquished 15 German troops in four separate firefights. For these acts of heroism, Daly was awarded the Medal of Honor, the military's highest decoration. Daly also earned three Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star during his service...

Since I consider Robert Hughes to be one of this country's finest art critics, I always read his articles with great interest. However, I was surprised that in his sensitive review of ''Gothic and Renaissance Art in Nuremberg, 1300-1550'' (ART, May 26), he spoke eloquently of Sculptor Veit Stoss but not so much as mentioned the master's contemporary, Tilman Riemenschneider. Khaldei wound up in a one-room flat on Moscow's outskirts on a $80 monthly pension, and died...

Prosecutors have described legal proceedings at Guantanamo as a contemporary version of Nuremberg, the post-World War Two tribunals that decided the fate of the major surviving Nazi war criminals. But for many critics the proceedings promise further bad publicity for the U.S. on a global scale. A dozen suspected al-Qaeda prisoners are in custody in Gitmo, among a prison population that currently numbers 280. The pace of legal motions is expected to increase in coming weeks, as trials loom for six "high-value" prisoners, including Khaled Sheik Mohammed, the self-professed mastermind of the 9/11 attacks. In February...

...only because screenwriter Abby Mann believed it was his duty to contribute to the betterment of mankind. His works tackled complex social issues: the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., the challenges faced by mentally disabled children and, in his best-known screenplay, 1961's Oscar-winning Judgment at Nuremberg, the accountability of those who worked with the Nazis. He was known to recall his works if he didn't like the way they had been adapted, often out of concern that they would lose their social relevance. "A great screenwriter should be given the same consideration as a great...
