LISTEN TO EVERY SONG on Billy Joel's new album exactly once. It's the most effective way for one-time or current fans of the Long Island pop star to purge any remaining faith they may have dutifully maintained in this man's music. The Nylon Curtain leaves no doubt: This once poignant chronicler of middle-class America has become a terribly frazzled music industry giant, offering a slick package with no redeemable contents...

...hedonism and pretentiousness in "Sleeping With The Television On" and "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me." But in his latest effort. Joel confirms his status as a songwriter swept up in his own whirlwind fame and alienated from the normality he used to celebrate and glorify. Although a nylon net pre vents a fall to the ground, the dangers are considerable if something goes wrong. Both brothers could land on their necks or heads, causing injury, or possibly even death. As the catcher, Juan also runs the risk of a shoulder dislocation. To pre vent such accidents, the brothers have made their bodies into pieces of interlocking machinery: they play soccer together for agility, lift weights for strength and box together to heighten their sensitivity to each other's movements. Miguel is small, 5 ft. 7 in., and slim, as fliers tend...

...mini's bon voyage across the Atlantic was largely the work of Enfant Terrible Rudi Gernreich, who was not only the first U.S. designer to bare the thigh, but also earned dubious fame with his topless swimsuit, the No-Bra bra and the see-through nylon blouse. By contrast with such outré expressions, the mini, if not the micromini, seemed positively respectable. Its social acceptance was assured when Jacqueline Kennedy surrendered to the new fashion...
