Artists Stanley Landsman and Roy Lichtenstein are also devotees of the period. Landsman collects slender "green-ies," a kind of metal figurine usually portraying a modish nymphet in an affected pose, which were popular as a decoration atop the family radio console. In his current show at Manhattan's Guggenheim Museum, Lichtenstein displays a series of what he calls "modern sculptures," whose source he proudly admits is his own extensive library of Art Deco. Done in sleek brass, they look as if they should be holding back the crowds at Radio City Music Hall. Another indication...
...this raises the question of Who is Mercy Humppe? An archetype of sorts? Hieronymous Merkin, her lover, says she is "the personification of every nymphet he ever chased across the green meadows of (his) imagination." In fact, she is more than that. Mercy Humppe is a virgin who makes love gladly and, therefore, a kind of magical creature. I mean how many girls could you be as sure about. You've seen her take her clothes off. You've seen him take her clothes off. There is no question about Mercy and yet there is. After six times...
Sooner than anyone can say nymphet, Luci has infected the doctor's entire household: Mom (Ann Lynn) gives in to her latent lesbianism. Junior (Derek Lamden) develops insatiable lechery, and the good doctor himself breaks out in cold sweats over Luci's miniskirts. Director Alastair Reid uses lots of nervous zoom shots and enormous close-ups that suggest the influence of Roman Polanski in every area except talent. Although Baby Love offers a little something for everybody-voyeurism, nymphomania, homosexuality, sadism-it does not really have enough of any one to appeal to anyone...
This language is the medium through which Grace Paley builds personality. It provides a salty, descriptive surface for otherwise callow characters such as the novice nymphet in bed with a soldier in A Woman, Young and Old, or the gay but rusting blade of The Contest who thinks he can do without marriage. For the book's best and most typical characters-spunky, passionate women, abandoned by men and saddled with children and poverty-life is a form of coping with the mysteries of love and loneliness...
...movies that at least in retrospect, have the qualities of classics. Hitchcock's Psycho inaugurated America's cinema of cruelty, with a demonic amalgam of bloodshed and violence that was not equaled until Bonnie and Clyde. Stanley Kubrick's Lolita treated the forbidden subject of nymphet-mania with cool humor; his Dr. Strangelove demonstrated that the biliousness of black comedy was as American as the H-bomb. John Frankenheimer's The Manchurian Candidate was a flawed murder drama that explored the mind of a brainwashed assassin with psychological depth and technical brilliance...
