...Turkey. Even with reduced scoring at the Chapel Hill performance, Brubeck's oratorio attested the composer's solid training as a serious musician, mostly under the eye of the French master Darius Milhaud at Mills College in Oakland, Calif. In twelve extensive, complex vocal movements, it traces a series of meditations on the universality of faith, with textual fragments drawn by Brubeck and his wife lola from the Gospels and Psalms. What little jazz there is in the score is far removed from the usual Brubeck sophistication: it is a more primitive, elemental sort, blended with folk overtones...
...game was hardly super, but neither was the action as one-sided as the score seemed to show. "That Oakland is a good, well-coached team," said Green Bay Coach Vince Lombardi, after his N.F.L.-champion Packers drubbed the A.F.L.-champion Raiders 33-14 in last week's Super Bowl. Lombardi had no such kind words last year for the Kansas City team that the Packers defeated (35-10) in the first Super Bowl. Oakland was clearly a classier club. The Raiders tallied 16 first downs to Green Bay's 19 (one of which came on a penalty...
...beauty of the Oakland Raider lineup is its solidity. With Clem Daniels injured, the Raiders have no spectacular individual performers (as Kansas City did last year), but more importantly they have no weaknesses. The front four of Davidson, Keating, Birdwell, and Lassiter may not dominate the game but they will hold their own up front. Middle linebacker Dan Connors is not as ostentations as the Pack's Ray Nitschke but he does the job. And Oakland's defensive backfield is every bit as good as Green Bay's! Willie Brown, Kent McLoughan, and Dave Grayson are quick, man, quick. Lance...
...quarterback, Daryle Lamonica personifies Oakland's humble, inconspicuous approach to this game. If there is another man as cagey as Lombardi, it is Raider boss Al Davis, and he has his team laying low. They will be psychologically ready when the time comes. In any case, Lamonica couldn't play worse than Dallas's Don Meredith did two weeks ago. We are betting he will be spectacular. If the game is close and low-scoring, as it should be, then Oakland's edge in both punting and place-kicking will also be important...
...game is devoid of the breaks and flukes that make sports interesting. I think the score will be Green Bay 20, Oakland 10. But throw in a key interception by Grambling's Willie Brown and Ike Lassiter's recovery of a Mercein fumble and the final comes out, Oakland Raiders 23, The Pack...
