There's the chance that all the well-meaning Obamamania can turn into Look Who's Coming to Washington fetishization. A New York Times article about the Obamas' school search described "little girls ... swooning over the prospect of White House sleepovers with the daughters of the nation's first black President," as if kids care about the race of the dad handing out the invites. There's a gaping tone to some of the coverage: Wow, just look at them...

...truth is international students here have been very interested in this election, as has the entire world. Obamamania is responsible for a part of it: Dial a random international number and you can probably hear the story of Barack Obama’s childhood. But the real reason this American election has received so much global attention is because the last eight years we have reminded us once again of how explicitly American policy can affect the lives of people who have no say in American politics...

...Vote for me, and in the worst-case scenario, you can vote for another Republican in a special election if I step down. Voters may have followed that logic. While Democrats would have loved to have sent Young and Stevens packing, Alaska is a deeply red state, and Obamamania never penetrated. Certainly Alaskans deserve legislators who match their values and allegiances - but they also deserve politicians who can serve them free of the taint of corruption...
