Bikila's triumph was all the more stunning because it happened in the capital of Ethiopia's former military occupier. Legend has it that he made his decisive move in the race just as he passed the Axum Obelisk, a towering stela that Mussolini had brought back from Ethiopia as war loot. Four years later in Tokyo, Bikila won gold again, the first man to defend his Olympic marathon title. This time he wore shoes...

...show all the fighting you would in an R-rated film, but don't show the toll it takes on the loser. Punches are fine, but no closeups of broken jaws; throw a guy off a rooftop, but don't show him landing impaled on an obelisk. Rush Hour 3 observes these niceties while twitting another MPAA rule: no four-letter words. In an early scene where Carter is interrogating a French-speaking thug through an interpreter, he gets exasperated and shouts: "You tell this piece of s-word that I will personally f-word him up." ...hollowed out the ground in front of it in a hole of the exact same dimensions, “like a shallow grave.” Finally, he filled the totem with the soil that had been scooped out. The result is “this weird, bizarrely black obelisk in the middle of the woods,” whose glass reflects its surroundings...

The 24-m.-high, 160-ton structure was looted by Italian forces on the orders of Mussolini in 1937, and remained in Rome despite a 1947 U.N. agreement mandating its return. At an emotional reception for the obelisk, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi hailed it as "a symbol of [Ethiopia's] identity...

...much of Bergen-Belsen remains today. A 25-meter-high gray stone obelisk marks the site, rising above it like a baleful warning. Inscribed on its side is a singular commandment: EARTH CONCEAL NOT THE BLOOD SHED ON THEE! Fourteen long, low mounds of mass graves are marked simply, starkly: HERE LIE BURIED 1,000 BODIES; HERE LIE 2,500 BODIES. In 1975, then Israeli Premier Yitzhak Rabin walked among the neatly tended graves of Bergen-Belsen and remarked bitterly, "It is so green that it is making me angry...
