There is a passage in Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" which, in view of the recent discussion about college discipline is so suggestive, that I venture to call your attention to it. Speaking of the discipline of colleges and universities Smith says: "Its object is, in all cases, to maintain the authority of the master, and, whether he neglects or performs his duty, to oblige the students in all cases to behave to him as if he performed it with the greatest diligence and ability. ...Harvard and Columbia. This is the only decision that Harvard should come to this year in the matter, and indeed from the first there has been no doubt that it would be finally settled in this way. The reasons for such refusal are already well known. We do not object to a freshman race with Yale, but we can row only one race, and must row Columbia, and do not think that there is room enough on the New London course for three boats to race with equal advantage. To many it has been evident for some time that the sport of lacrosse as an object of University interest and support, was doomed, and the meeting of yesterday afternoon has now fortunately settled the question. We regret that the team could not go on and finish the season but under the circumstances we commend most heartily the decision of yesterday's meeting...
...will be given the annual spring concert of the freshman Glee and Banjo clubs for the benefit of the freshman crew. The members of the clubs have been practicing diligently for the past few weeks, and the indications are that the concert will be an unusually good one. The object for which the proceeds from the concert will be devoted is a worthy one, and for this reason alone, the concert is deserving of a large audience...
