...could possibly object to moderation. And yet, as we all know, moderation pettifogs and sniffs out loopholes, and has a tendency to live life one day at a time, in the wrong direction: "Oh, I'll have eggs Benedict, just this once." The truth is that moderation works only if you are an unblinking maniac about it. While admirable when rigidly observed, moderation is ultimately a thin creed, a sort of Unitarianism of diet, a deism of good intentions...
Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills, another object of Nuwaubian ire, says he fears that young people are being held against their will. "No one in Georgia has ever dealt with anything like this," he says. "You only draw parallels to Waco, and I don't want a Waco. This is a cult." A Nuwaubian spokesman scoffs at the idea: "There is no one being held on Tama-Re against their will. No one is allowed to move to Tama-Re that is under 18. The children that are here belong to grown adults who have made the choice...
...mystery senators who put secret "holds" on Richard Holbrooke's nomination as United Nations ambassador, at least one and perhaps as many as three more senators are putting their weight on the brakes. George Voinovich of Ohio has joined Lott, McConnell and Charles Grassley - the first senator to object - in seeking to hold up Holbrooke's confirmation until their demands are met. While Voinovich's reasons are not yet clear, for McConnell and Lott, the motive was campaign-finance reform ? or, rather, their opposition to it. The two Republicans want to get an Ohio law professor ? who thinks that bans...
This brings on another thought. Could it be that what is sometimes described as wooden or stiff or robotic about Gore--the quality that led me to describe him as "a manlike object"--is a reflection of some hitherto-unrevealed ethnic heritage? If so, maybe supporters who have grown tired of responding to comments about Gore's otherworldly stiffness by saying over and over again that he's good in small groups could switch to something like, "He's Norwegian, you know." On the other hand, what good did that do Mondale...
...anthropologist, I firmly object to the theories presented by paleoanthropologist Erik Trinkaus [PALEONTOLOGY, May 3], who supports the idea that there was interbreeding between prehistoric Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens. Archaeologists merely uncovered a single skeleton of a child with a mixture of modern and Neanderthal features. To deduce that this indicates a peaceful coexistence or gradual immersion of Neanderthals into the Homo sapiens gene pool is groundless and inconsistent in the face of DNA testing recently conducted. The Neanderthals, like other hominids, are no more. Perhaps mankind's evolution was a more violent affair than we would like...
