...recurrent theme is how students, who really have no formal power, can obtain and exercise power. "Student power" can bring pressure on a university certainly, on a society possibly. It requires no reliance on a reluctant faculty, a quiescent labor movement, a non-existent peasant class. It also requires no fixed ideology. Ideologies divide as well as unite. They divided students in the 1930's. But, after McCarthy in the United States and polycentrism in the Communist world, the line between the moderates and the liberals versus the radicals is no longer so sharply drawn or drawn at all. ...statement, which avoided mention of the Selective Service, explained vaguely that they had tried to prevent an "intrusion by the university...into the political arena" or, at least, something that would be "regarded" as an intrusion. Their move, however, accomplished what the Faculty wanted: draft boards no longer can obtain class ranks from Columbia students...
...proportion of Cliffies who actually turn to the clinic is probably not high. Statistics, of course, are impossible to obtain. Each visit to the walk-in clinic must be recorded in a student's folder, and individual doctors can paraphrase a birth control query in different ways. Dr. Preston K. Munter, assistant director of UHS, thinks that most doctors record such a visit as "inf"-asked for general medical information. But at least one Cliffie who asked a doctor for pills recently saw him write "pills" in her folder in large block letters...
...abortions are performed outside the law. It is certain that the UHS rarely hears about illegal abortions involving Radcliffe students. There is a Harvard-Radcliffe underground directory of abortionists' names and contacts to which people turn first. Again there are no statistics, but abortions are not extremely difficult to obtain in the Boston area, where prices range from $250 up to $1000. Trips to Montreal or Puerto Rico, where abortion is legal, are not uncommon. Japan, where abortion is both legal and very cheap, is not unheard-of as a place of last resort. Estimates on how many Cliffies have...
Attracting industry is one part of the job of making Reston a complete city. Getting low-cost housing for industrial workers is another, and it is tougher. Money for housing projects is difficult to obtain the FHA is sufficiently pressed by the private developers and in-town redevelopment authorities to pay much attention to experimental model communities. However, the U.S. Geological Survey, which employs 8000 low-salaried workers, has decided to move to Reston. As a result, Simon has obtained federal funds to build a low-income housing project right in Lake Anne village. This, hopefully, will become the model...
