...what is the source of this opposition? This isn't as patently obvious a question as it first sounds. The most common rationale I've heard for not giving the President an honorary is that "he's not worthy of one." In answer to the query "Why?," I usually hear some variant of the theme "he's an enemy of higher education" (read "he's tried to cut student aid"). Never mind that Reagan is the premier politician of our times, with more practical knowledge of politics than any Harvard undergraduate Gov concentrator--he's still "unworthy" of a degree...
Medical science is not sure what a decade of daily dioxin exposure has done or will do. Cancers and genetic damage are the most fearsome possibilities. But one obvious effect of the dioxin discovery has been the rearrangement of townspeople's memories: in retrospect, that purplish coating on the streets has become the paradigm for life in Times Beach. They remember, now, all the dead birds around town, and the stillborn kittens and puppies. Michael Reid, 19, remembers that he and other children loved to bicycle behind the dioxin truck, skidding and sliding in the thick oil slick...

The play itself, a 4 1/2-hour tragedy about the pitiable denizens of a flyblown bar, lacks obvious commercial appeal. And as the central figure, the best-liked man, Robards must torment his friends, show himself capable of cold-blooded murder, then celebrate his certain doom. The women in the play are all prostitutes, and family life is seen only as a remembered torment. The text is rich in humor, but much of it verges on the cruel or the macabre...

...Zoomin'. A bunch of Hot Stars get in on Aretha's Action as if they all wished to exploit (whoops, I mean insure) the Rebirth of a Legend. In addition to Lennox and Stewart, Peter Wolf chimes in for a phony duet (with an obvious nod to Mick and Tina) and Carlos Santana and Clarence Clemons drop by for a pair of specialty solos. It all adds up to what could have been but wasn't. Too bad Franklin doesn't have (just a little bit) of self...
