...dangers of this form of self-injury are obvious, and serious. Creating any wound in the skin can lead to infection, but when foreign objects are inserted deep into tissue, the risk is amplified. "The infections aren't just at the site," Shiels says. "You can get a deep muscle infection or a bone infection," or if you hit arteries, veins, nerves or tendons while driving something into the soft tissue, you can cause tears or other damage. Beyond those risks, there is also the possibility that objects can travel once inside the body, approaching vital organs. "They pose significant...

...What's Next for the GOP Ramesh Ponnuru makes many valid points in his analysis of the abject failure of the Republican Party in the 2008 elections [Dec. 1]. Yet I would like to suggest an extremely obvious reason: the abysmal record of the Bush Administration. With George W. ...Americans and the Czech ambassador. The crying child in Mumbai who had lost his parents wrenched my heart with pain, as did the image of the Pathan child whose family was instantly killed by an American drone attack in northwestern Pakistan. The parallels were all too stark and obvious, and my heart bled as it had at each past instance of terrorism, be it in Islamabad, Mumbai, or Baghdad...
