For instance, one person let me know, “The only things that I find comical about you’re columns is you’re complete butchery of proper grammar.” Some people try to be less obvious with their critical comments. Following a few positive reader comments that were posted online about an article that I wrote, someone chimed in with this message: “I couldn’t agree more with the three prior comments. You are soooo sexy, brilliant, hilarious, and awe-inspiring. Some...

Last year, when Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin proposed a very modest reform to address the 21.5 percent youth unemployment rate that would have given young employees slightly less job security, widespread student street demonstrations caused the reform bill to be withdrawn. The obvious conclusion drawn from this experience by French politicians was that any further moves toward reform would have to be deferred until the Presidential election and perhaps a fresh round of parliamentary elections. McKinsey estimates that by 2025 there will be 220 million upper-middle-class households in China's cities, defined as those making $5,000 to $12,500 a year, in contrast to 23 million households in 2005. ...obvious effect was a flight of pre-med students who would have potentially concentrated in the interdisciplinary biological anthropology to the HEB, which is little more than concentrating in pre-med. Overnight, BioAnthro quietly started to fade into that sacred elephant-burial ground where concentrations go to die. All the biological anthropology classes from the tutorials on up have been renumbered to HEB classes. Students who attempted to get a study card signed for biological anthropology were encouraged by the department to strongly consider HEB. As a result, biological anthropology has gone from a small but lively concentration...
