...planting 25 to 35 acres more than his ten-acre allotment. Each year he was fined; each year the Government piled on another penalty, until the total got to $4,562. "I decided to quit," he told a Democrat-controlled House agriculture committee last week, "when it became obvious the fight no longer was with the United States Government but with the people who want something for nothing -the 'gimmes...

...urge to enhance Macmillan's prestige with the British electorate; to the Russians, Britain's Socialists, with their distrust of the U.S. and their more experimental approach to the cold war, have more appeal than the Tories. Khrushchev's main interest in the Macmillan visit, obvious except to Whitehall, lay in his hope that it would uncover a split between the U.S. and British governments over Berlin. When he found Macmillan consistently taking the line that the West was unshakably united in the determination to hold its position in Berlin, Khrushchev complained to his companions that Macmillan...

...wrote: "I name Pierre Bonnard my sole legatee," and signed it with the name of Maria Boursin. But he was so inept a scoundrel that he dated the will on the day he wrote it-ten months after Marthe's death. Economists of the Department of Agriculture estimate that the 3,100,000 commercial farms of 1954 may well be 2,000,000 by 1975. But they see rising prices for land and even used equipment making it easy for farmers to sell out at good prices. Those who stay in will have bigger markets. In 1940 each U.S. farmer fed himself and ten others. He now feeds 20 others...
