Members of the Faculty have obvious reponsibilities for instruction though they may set their own priorities for scholarly and creative work. And the academic units to which they belong must call on them constantly to be concerned with the curriculum of the department or program, with staffing matters and with student advising. They are demanding and time-consuming activities. Yet there is another entity, "the Faculty," which also needs and deserves the collective attention and individual commitment of its members...
Although the fellows are the most obvious beneficiaries of the program, the fellows say the program also helps the University. It serves as living testimony to Harvard's growing involvement in neighboring school systems and helps dispell many of the Ivory Tower myths that surround the school. Blackman calls Harvard "a sort of mystical place with ivy-covered walls down the street," and fellows say that few local teachers consider the University when they think about getting higher degrees...
...nature, this "universe" is hardly an average sampling of SAT candidates. At a school as selective as Harvard, a smaller percentage of students will seek or benefit from formal testing preparation. (If the Globe article was accurate, 200 of those returning surveys took any form of preparation.) It seems obvious that startingly different statistics would have resulted if this study had been done at the University of Massachusetts...
