...national alarm over inadequate living facilities, coupled with the uncertainty over the political future, has created an almost fatalistic despondency among many Japanese. Early in September the feeling was heightened by a curious natural phenomenon. Off the Philippines there originates an ocean current that the Japanese call Kuroshio (the black current). Carrying a water volume of 500 Amazon Rivers north and east along Japan's mountainous Pacific coast, Kuroshio has served for eons as the conveyor belt for a wealth of marine resources. But last month the black current brought mostly trouble. For reasons still not explained, Kuroshio began running...
...profession that, in its strenuousness and immediacy, cannot have Prousts. "Have camera, will travel" is its motto and its boast. In the last 30-odd years, much of that time working for LIFE, Duncan has been nearly everywhere and done nearly everything-from catching monster squid in the ocean off Peru to recording the home life of Picasso. He has been shot at by Japanese ack-ack gunners, Korean snipers and Vietnamese rocketeers. All this is documented in a retrospective show now at the Nelson-Atkins Galleries in Kansas City, Mo., which happens to be his home town...
...truth of a family is like the truth of an ocean, a series of movements in which themes occur and recur," the author writes. It seems particularly true of adolescence. Urie informs Zeb, an ardent believer, that there is no God, that Socrates was a better man than Jesus. When the young man recovers, they go on to other intellectual topics-something called "the Cult of Ugliness," then the "sexual power of puberty," and finally, of course, Krafft-Ebing. But their first kiss leads only to a more metaphysical discussion. Clearly such cerebral lovers have no future. For sex Urie...
Patiently examining dozens of tiny tektites taken from the ocean floor off the Ivory Coast, Physicists Saeed A. Durrani and Hameed A. Khan found a striking correlation: large numbers of tektites had drifted to the sea bottom at about the same time that the earth's magnetic field is known to have had one of its reversals, some 900,000 years ago. Checking with other research, they found that another major concentration of these microtektites had settled around Australasia during another reversal that took place 700,000 years...
...group celebrated those slender but seductive values more lovingly than the Beach Boys. Theirs was a soft, euphonious music-intricate, warm layers of bell-like harmonies over calm, steady rock beats, all of it intended to evoke the rhythm of the ocean. When it came to the message, the Boys never let content interfere with contentment. "You can always write about social causes, but who gives a damn?" No. 1 Beach Boy Brian Wilson asked at the time. "I like to write about something these kids feel is their whole world." In song after song-Little Deuce Coupe, Car Crazy...
