Named by the fishermen of Peru and Ecuador, El Niño is a warm current of equatorial water that usually appears around Christmas off western South America. When experts at the Pentagon recently examined a Soviet ocean buoy obtained by American intelligence agencies through unspecified means, they were not surprised at what they found.
