...fact that organisms can survive in extreme - seemingly lethal - conditions is nothing new. Researchers have found creatures living at boiling vents on the floor of the ocean, in desert sands that virtually never see water; fossilized remains of microorganisms have even been found inside of rocks. Antarctic life, however, has always been a more complex matter. Antarctica was once a warmer, wetter land than it is now, but continental migration pushed it from place to place, leaving it - for the current epoch at least - at the bottom of the planet, where it became little more than a frozen desert...
...last night is brushing my teeth in this bathroom for a full hour, molars jagged with chewed-up Doritos, and four or five other guys all huddled around too, slumped in the three-part corners where two walls meet the floor. We’d talked about the fathomless ocean of history in sentences that ranged from two to a hundred words long. Then we must have dispersed. The shortened towline turned what could have been a trio of difficult shots across hundreds of yards of ocean into relatively easy 30-yd. pops. It's a safe bet future pirates won't be so naive. But the Pentagon is drawing up a project to make it easier to hit targets at much longer distances: a super-sniper rifle called the EXACTO, short for EXtreme ACcuracy Tasked Ordnance...
Other Defense contracts have resulted in commercial ships getting some extra-special defense. Maersk (the owner of the Alabama, whose captain was rescued Sunday) won a deal last November to transport naval jet fuel from South Korea to the Indian Ocean in a 856-foot tanker, the Maersk Rhode Island. A 12-strong Force Protection team was tapped to travel on that. Involved in prepo for decades, the Norfolk, VA-based shipper last January also won a deal estimated at $316 million to deliver defense equipment, mail and PX merchandise globally...
