...primary evidence that stars are taking steroids is ocular. "I look around the league, and I see guys a lot bigger," notes Andy Van Slyke, who in the 1980s roamed the Pittsburgh outfield with Bonds and who last week said he believed Bonds took steroids. "When I played, I worked out with weights, I ate right, and I could never gain 25 lbs. in the off-season. I just couldn't do it." Of course, with steroidophobia in the air, bulking up is suddenly not so chic. Giambi, who claims he lost only 4 lbs. over the winter, looks...
PRESSURE POINT Protecting the eyes from glaucoma, a major cause of vision loss in the U.S., could be as simple as dribbling a few medicated drops into the eyes. Too much ocular fluid building up in the eyes squeezes the optic nerve, impairing sight. But eyedrops designed to drain that fluid in a flush of tears can reduce the risk of developing glaucoma more than 50%, according to a study of over 1,600 patients. That's especially encouraging since 3 million to 6 million Americans have elevated pressure in the eyes that puts them at high risk for developing...
...other diseases, and all have marijuana prescriptions fromm licensed physicians. Leanne Orgen, 46, an insurance broker with liver cancer, buys pot-laced chocolate-chunk brownies--a "miracle drug" for chemotherapy-induced nausea, she says. Jeffrey Farrington, 32, who has glaucoma, explains that if he stops smoking marijuana, which relieves ocular pressure, he loses more than 7 ft. of vision daily. "If they shut us down," he says, "I'll go blind and I'll watch my friends die of AIDS...
...involved details that sound more like makeshift engineering than surgery. First, doctors removed the remains of Kadriu's damaged eye and retrieved its surrounding membrane, which was reinserted after being filled with a piece of fat from Kadriu's buttock to create an eye-shaped mass with the remaining ocular muscles attached to it. It will later form a mobile platform for a false eye resembling a giant contact lens. Doctors then re-created an upper eyelid using cartilage from the back of an ear and a lower eyelid with skin from the forehead. Next, doctors exposed the remaining parts...
...Angela Jefferson, 36, wakes up to the insistent patter of a HealthWatch Model 9000 alarm clock. "Today is Monday, and the time is 6 a.m.," the little box chirps. Angela stares at its smooth, blue face long enough for the embedded microlaser to scan the back of her eye. "Ocular pressure, blood pressure and carbon-dioxide levels normal," the alarm clock reports. "But you are dehydrated. I'll signal the refrigerator to fix you an electrolyte cocktail...
