...been two years in the making. When I was writing my first two books I was also freelancing and teaching and doing other odd jobs. For this one I pretty much just wrote. And I wrote much longer hours than I had in the past. I worked more intensively on this book than I plan to for any future book. I don't think I'll have another book for four or five years, and that's fine with me. In some ways I think it would be very dignified if I went away for twenty years and then wrote...

...trees were barely moving. It's certainly a strong storm, but not nearly as powerful as folks feared. And so Gustav arrived with a somewhat diminished bang, the first bands striking just before midnight. For much of Sunday evening, the city, and region, had been bathed in the odd silence that usually precedes hurricanes. As the wind quickened, the street lights shook...

Six years later, considering the posthumous collection Agee on Film, Manny was less generous. The essay, "Nearer My Agee to Thee," alternates salutes and bitch-slaps so rapidly it seems simultaneously a military tribute and a Three Stooges routine. But that's par for a Farber piece. As Polito notes, he "sustains strings of divergent, perhaps irreconcilable adjectives...

...Jonases are still so young--that it's easy to wonder if they're performing their own taste or that of their dad, who is also their co-manager. This may explain the presence of some weird banter at the beginning of songs and a few theatrically odd phrasings at the end of them: the brothers are desperate to assert they can be playful beneath the polish. So maybe they're not the Beatles. Or the Jackson 5. But they're a damn sight better than the Osmonds...
