...island's northwest, one of McCallum's students has been tracking an odd trend in the epidemic. In the past two years, only 10 animals with tumors have been found in a forestry area known as West Pencil Pine, a favorite devil haunt. That suggests that the disease's spread is slowing. Could local devils be resisting it? Belov and Woods are both itching to compare MHC types in the region, and a major effort to trap West Pencil Pine devils will soon begin. "The next month could be a watershed," says Woods. "We're hoping...

...very appealing notion that genetic discrimination is unfair looks especially odd in the context of insurance. The idea of insurance is to protect against the unexpected or unlikely. Forbidding insurers to take predictable risks into account when choosing whom to insure and how much to charge is asking them to behave irrationally and make bets they are sure to lose. Not insuring people who are likely to get cancer, or charging them more, isn't evil. It's rational behavior. Of course, we outlaw a lot of behavior that would be rational if it weren't against...

...than this glossed-over fairy tale about Barack Obama's upbringing and take up his invitation to address the substantive issues presented in his biography. The article neglects to mention that Obama's father had children by four women and that he abandoned each of them in succession. Its odd statement that S. Ann Soetoro "decided not to follow" Obama's father back to Kenya neatly overlooks the fact that he was returning to Kenya (and his Kenyan wife and children) with an American wife whom he had married in Massachusetts after he left Ann and Barack in Hawaii...

...have forged ahead, however, talked to restaurateurs in what must be the hundreds, and now press closer (hopefully, someday, maybe) to securing a job for the now too-near future, my confidence in my own strange road is budding. It is odd, but exciting. A new twist. Refreshing. Kind of like a ham and cheese wrap-roll-up-sandwich on your last day in Barcelona...
