...Antigone in New York. , Polish emigre Janusz Glowacki has carved a niche as the U.S. stage's foremost writer on the East European immigrant experience, and he may be the most incisive satirist as well. Washington's Arena Stage impeccably mounted this odd lark, derived from Greek myth, about two derelicts' attempt to bury a fallen comrade -- interspersed with caustic remarks about two soulless worlds: the KGB's Russia and Manhattan...
...nothing less than find a way to break out. By tradition, TIME's Men and Women of the Year are those who have most influenced history, for good or ill, in the previous 12 months. By that standard, Rabin, Arafat, Mandela and De Klerk might be perceived as odd choices. Neither peacemaking deal is complete. Extremists on all sides threaten to destroy the arrangements, which look at times like fragile shelters being nailed together in a high wind. The regions seem just as violent now as they did before Arafat and Rabin shook hands on the White House lawn...
Good to hear them again-the marine drill sergeants' obscene arias of disgust and contempt (see also Full Metal Jacket and Heartbreak Ridge) as they begin the process of stripping young American males of their individuality, any tendency they might have to think for themselves or harbor the odd, rebellious thought. After sitting down to write a mock letter of apology to Berlusconi, the odd couple racked their brains for something positive to say. Drawing a blank, the scrawny comic then feigned a call to a friend who works for the Prime Minister's party, but no luck there either. "Nothing," he told Celentano. "But he said he'll make some calls and get back...
...Yunnan by the Nature Conservancy (TNC) and catching on in other parts of the country, is cutting down on tree cutting. In place of a woodpile, the system gives homes a pigpen, toilet, greenhouse, underground tank and some rubber tubing. Waste--from the pigpen, the toilet and the odd kitchen scrap--ferments in the underground tank, heating the greenhouse and producing a steady stream of methane to power stoves and lamps. The greenhouse helps keep the tank warm in winter, and the by-product of the tank's digestion makes good fertilizer. The whole setup costs $180. TNC, which installed...
