...DONALDSON: MR. SHING-A-LING (Blue Note). Following the success of his Alligator Bogaloo, Donaldson now applies his jazz alto, accompanied by trumpet, organ, guitar and drums, to such recent familiars as The Shadow of Your Smile and Ode to Billie Joe. Since he never wanders far from the melody on these tunes, those who get lost easily in jazz improvisation need not fear for their direction. More venturesome listeners may feel that Donaldson has settled for a too-safe format...

Boff of the Week Standing in as host of NBC's Kraft Music Hall, Woody Allen produced a wicked parody called Bonnie's Clyde- with Allen as "Warren Beauty" and Liza Minnelli as "Faye O'Laye." Best boff: after Bonnie recites her ode to the Barrow Gang exploits, Clyde's brother Buck says, "I'm only a dumb hillbilly, ma'am, and I don't hold much truck with poetry, but you know what you've done?" Bonnie: "What's that, Buck Barrow?" Buck: "You've managed to combine...

BOBBIE GENTRY: ODE TO BILLY JOE (Capitol). A first collection of songs by the new belle of the pop world. Bobbie's theme song, bursting on the scene in July, made all sorts of promises that this album doesn't keep. The trouble is that Bobbie must improve on Billy, admittedly a masterpiece but not enough of one to cinch the revolution in pop music that it portends. In any case, it is dangerous to underrate Bobbie Gentry, and her initial album might well qualify as a collector's item...

...Columbia). Gee whillikers! Such classical music and such libidinous Latin! Actually Orff's version of The Songs of Catullus is one of the most fascinating pieces of music composed in this century (completed in 1943). Its explicit text by Catullus (847-54 B.C.) is a delightfully, powerfully pagan ode to the joys and heartbreaks of love and lust. Eugene Ormandy's Philadelphia Orchestra and the Temple University Choirs understand and communicate the wild spirit of the piece...
