Smith has not found the sled with the rosebud on it. Those who thought Kennedy an odious character will not find much ammunition, although the letters are disfigured here and there by outbursts of irritable anti-Semitism. Kennedy had multiple identities, as Smith says in a lovely introduction that is both haunted and haunting: He was father, speculator, film producer, bootlegger, chairman (of the SEC and the Federal Maritime Commission), philanderer, philanthropist, kingmaker...
...Last Remains of the Dodo" Gorgeous hooks and bittersweet attitude to spare. Nothing involving the marriage of melody and lyrics (the basis for songs, last I checked) beat "Red Vines" in these ears this year. Throw in the Oscar nomination for "Magnolia" (inexplicably defeated by the odious Phil Collins entry), a tour with hubby Michael Penn and a worthwhile best-of collection including highlights from her 'Til Tues-days, and it was a banner year for the prickly princess...

W., surprisingly, was first to win a statehouse; Jeb, the anointed one, lost before he won. Barbara Bush went around exclaiming, "Can you believe...
...odious or ordinary. But becoming president makes him suddenly splendid - or at least impressive. The magic office gives him the radiance of power. In early 1969, the Washington Post's liberal cartoonist Herblock granted to his old nemesis Richard Nixon a famous "free shave" - a fresh start, the refulgence that comes with the Oval...
