...annual review of cultural events, recalled with fondness or contempt. Except for the film Kandahar and David Letterman's TV show, the items cited here do not relate directly to the attacks on the U.S. But they do speak to our need to look back: to Greek myths (reinvented off-Broadway), to John Adams (in a new biography), to '70s punk (rekindled by the Strokes). We also look up (at the winged victory of a Milwaukee museum) and, for therapeutic escape, look away (to the canny lunacy of Shrek, to Nike ads and the fierce melodrama of the 2001 World...

...dressed in togas, others in modern-day suits--jump in and out of it to re-enact the myths of Ovid. There's Phaeton and his chariot; Midas (in the chair) and his daughter; Orpheus and his underworld voyage. Writer-director Mary Zimmerman's lovely, deeply affecting work (an off-Broadway hit moving to Broadway in March) recaptures the primal allure of the theater--it's fake; isn't it wonderful? ...lifting. But they have always been predictably expert actors. Tomei's career path is radically different. She came out of nowhere to win the supporting-actress Oscar, over more prestigious competitors, for her hilarious work in 1992's My Cousin Vinny. Then, and just as suddenly, she swooned into off-Broadway plays and smallish roles in obscure films, where she also gained a reputation as "difficult." Now she's back, and damned if people aren't talking Oscar nomination again...

Everybody gets into the pool at one point or another in Mary Zimmerman's entrancing theater piece Metamorphoses. But somehow it's the audience that feels most refreshed. This off-Broadway show--which opened at Manhattan's Second Stage Theatre in October and has been such a hit that it's planning a move to Broadway in February--is theater as primal as it is charming. Zimmerman likes to say the playwright and audience are "collaborating in a dream," and she has brought some of humanity's oldest dreams--Greek myths--to shimmering life...
