From the Mississippi Delta, which opened off-Broadway last week after extensive regional tryouts, blends folktales, childhood memories, salty down- home sociological observations and blues and gospel standards with Holland's unabashed "confessions." Raped in childhood, a prostitute as a teenager, she eventually earned a Ph.D. and now teaches American studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo. The first act, about the world she came from, is diffuse, as much panorama as autobiography. The second is more tightly personal, yet it too derives from the oldest notion of the theater -- as pure storytelling. Three stunningly gifted women...
BEGGARS IN THE HOUSE OF PLENTY. The family is as quarrelsome as in Moonstruck, but this time John Patrick Shanley views the combat unforgivingly. His own off-Broadway staging is stylized and energetic. The role based on him is convincingly played by Loren Dean, star of the current film Billy Bathgate...
...BABY DANCE. A desperate L.A. yuppie couple arrange to buy the unborn child of a dirt-poor Louisiana pair in Jane Anderson's passionate off-Broadway drama, beautifully realized in the fierce, moving performances of TV's Linda Purl and Stephanie Zimbalist, and Richard Lineback...

His "Jorgy" Jorgenson is as stiff as Larry is slinky, a man who's all stature and no smarts. Luckily...
Maybe the college professors think Shakespeare produced only 37 plays, but this off-Broadway lark is the Bard's long-lost science-fiction rock musical. Small of scale and free of spirit, it features the obligatory mad monster, fair maiden, evil scientist and heroic space pilot. Sci-fi junkies will recognize the plot from the 1956 MGM flick Forbidden Planet, which the more literary-minded in turn saw as an amalgam of Shakespeare's The Tempest and dime-store Freud. (The killer demons were escapees from the id of a man who, like most sci-fi antiheroes, tried to play...
