...this sounds like the umpteenth rewrite of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, the best defense Brian Friel might offer for his superb play, now off-Broadway, is that his characters seem Chekhovian only because they are so candid and self-aware. In Beth Henley's 1984 off-Broadway hit The Miss Firecracker Contest, a seamstress named Popeye Jackson explained that as a child she "used to make little outfits for the bullfrogs that lived out around our yard."
