There are "characters" and clowns aplenty abroad on the Cambridge scene who are notorious as such and whose careers have been nothing but slightly sublimated vaudeville shows. These Mr. Cromarty may well attack with a barrage of personalities since they offer no other qualities for consideration, but the article at hand does not deal with such a person and is, as a result, altogether deplorable. The author evidently realized his lapse from propriety both academic and journalistic when he signed himself discreetly with a nom de plume. Such anonymity must be deserved...
Officials. By no means all officials are good performers. The unofficial stage managers quickly pick their favorites and offer them all the best engagements. Of the present Cabinet, Messrs. Stimson, Mellon, Adams, Lament and Mitchell are booked in advance. Only a few Senators and their wives hold the steady interest of Washington Society. Among these are Senators Bingham, Couzens, Edge, Hale, Johnson, Moses, Phipps, Shipstead, Wagner, Tydings. Senator Borah still moves at the edge of this group, an old lion whose mane and roaring once petrified and enchanted but are now too familiar to impress...

Thereafter, mostly among the quiet intellectual Brahmans but also among the outcastes, he preached the Christ, not Western, but universal. Him they would accept because they had spiritual accord with the mysticism of his life and suffering...
Slapper Mitchell. Activities of Banker Mitchell as Wall Street rescuer and Federal Reserve Bad Boy turned upon his offer to put $25,000,000 into the call money market. Inasmuch as call money had reached 20% during the famed 8,000,000 share turnover market-break (TIME, April i), the assurance of available funds had a tremendous moral effect. For traders were not so much worried about a 20% rate as about the fact that even at 20% money was not available. Thus the Mitchell announcement stabilized the market, much to the disgust of the Federal Reserve Board, which...
